Reflections on Secular Buddhism
An Evening with Stephen Batchelor
Thursday, March 18, 2010 7:30 - 9:00pm Melrose
Come spend an evening with world-renowned author and scholar Stephen Batchelor as he discusses his new book, Confessions of a Buddhist Atheist. Batchelor has spent a life time practicing and studying Buddhism and this new work represents a break with the traditional teachings of Buddhism. It is based on years of research and presents a groundbreaking portrait of the historical Buddha based on the Pali Canon. Batchelor offers a less dogmatic view of the Buddha's teachings which he divorces from their religious predecessors while still affirming their importance and relevance. Stephen will also discuss his own journey through Buddhism over the past 35 years. There will also be a question and answer period, and Confessions of a Buddhist Atheist will be available for purchase.
Stephen will present a portrait of the Buddha and Buddhism that is truly Against the Stream!
Stephen Batchelor is a former monk in the Tibetan and Zen traditions, and author of the bestseller, Buddhism Without Beliefs. He is the co-founder of the Sharpham College for Buddhist Studies in England, a Guiding Teacher at Gaia House meditation center in Devon, and a contributing editor to Tricycle magazine. He currently lives in France and travels the world several months of the year leading meditation retreats and teaching Buddhism. Cost: $25
This evening will be held at 4300 Melrose Ave., Los Angeles, 90029.
